For this project, I set about improving my hard surface modeling along with growing accustomed to different software. In this model, I incorporated Pureref, 3D Max, Maya, Substance Painter, and Z-brush.
I sculpted a rough block out of a P-51 Mustang using references and accurate blueprints of the plane's design which were available online, lowering the window transparency in ZBrush to get accurate proportions in all dimensions. I then reopologised this plane in Maya, and remodeled the resulting low poly mesh in 3Ds max, thereby lowering the polycount and ensuring clean topology. I UV-mapped the mesh in Maya, then textured it in Substance Painter, then added the final details using a paint layer and weld brush to make all the seams look natural/add the panels. I then used the screw brush on the inside of each panel. This took too long individually, but by reducing the spacing on the brush I could create a long line of screws in one stroke, saving significant time and effort.
I'm happy with the result and have resolved to retry with another mechanical device, this time to try making removable modular pieces and mechanical parts, such as the engine.
